Opening of the castle bridge in Schleswig

The southern bridge to Gottorf Castle is officially open!

The aim was to achieve a harmonious overall picture of the access route and castle, and this was achieved: Monument, nature and water protection for the bridge, which was built around 1850, played a key role in the implementation of the new replacement.

Our planning team, Andrea Ulrich (design and implementation planning) and Olaf Brüggemann (local construction supervision) implemented the requirements for the integration of the new bridge into the historical surroundings as follows:

  • Preservation of the listed substructures and spanning with a new bridge (span width 12.30 m)
  • Reuse of many historical components (paving, bollards, etc.)
  • Laying of large-format cobblestones in bonded construction as road surface in coordination with the monument protection authorities
  • Design of the new railing based on the old, historic bridge railing
  • Construction of the new superstructure in steel composite construction
  • Deep foundation of the bridge on a total of 12 bored piles, each 20 m long, and 8 inclined piles

After one year of construction, the 144 m² bridge was officially opened on April 24, 2024 in a ceremony attended by representatives of the city of Schleswig, the engineering team Trebes, the construction company Holst and the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation. The construction costs amount to approx. 1.6 million euros.
